Arizona cities and industries repeatedly emptied polluted water into rivers and washes during 2005, exceeding clean-water rules by as much as nine times the legal limit, a new report said Thursday.
More than 40 percent of Clean Water Act permit holders reported violations over the 12-month period, according to the report by the advocacy group Environment Arizona.
"Polluters continue to foul our rivers, lakes and streams," the group's Stephen Reed said. "We should be outraged."
The most frequent violator was the Nogales International Wastewater Treatment Plant, which treats waste from two border cities. It was the only permit holder to exceed limits during all 12 reporting periods, posting 45 violations.
The most common contaminant in Arizona was chlorine. E. coli also was found in several locations, including the Agua Fria River in Avondale and Ruby Wash in Winslow.
Here are some comments that followed this article:
CHLORINE??? You have to be kidding me. Since when? Chlorine is used to treat drinking water so you don't get E. Coli, etc. It disappears quickly from the water.
As for E. Coli being found in the rivers - go figure. It comes from all warm blooded animals feces. So, if you have ducks, or rabbits, or cows, or sheep, or coyotes, or . . . You get my point.
Never mind Mexico is the 10th Wealthiest country on the planet, We get to pay for their HUMAN WASTE
